On Friday 29th November club members Hugh Rooney and John Miskelly spoke of the some contemporary photographers who have influenced their own photographic visions.
Hugh elected to speak first and introduced a video clip by Bruce Percy a Scottish landscape and travel photographer who spoke of his journey over the time scale of twenty years photographing in Bolivia . Japan and of course Scotland .The story of this talk was defined by the notion of personal development of a photographic style with Bruce declaring that to emulate is often the means by which many start their photographic journey .However the reality in visiting a location may not match the original image you wish to emulate. This can be for many different reasons both technical but principally the prevailing conditions will be different making it difficult to replicate another's work . Emulation can only get you so far and wont allow photographer to make a landscape their own . Finding your own voice is not easy and many will struggle . If you do manage to arrive at a photographic identity it will only happen over time .
Bruces work is exemplary delicate , minimalist high key works of art which invoke an emotional response .
Other notable photographers who are admired by Hugh are George Digilakis https://www.digalakisphotography.com. Teo Kefalopoulos https://www.teokefalopoulos.com and Huibo Hou https://www.huibohou.com
To end Hugh displayed his own minimalist fine art images of Venice.
Following the refreshment break John Miskelly a professional fine art photographer commenced by outlining his photographic development which commenced some twenty one years ago at which time not being aware of ICM [intentional camera movement ] he was never the less concerned to experiment with alternative ideas and processes which have over time evolved to result in his present work .John showcased examples of his work from 2023 and said that expressing emotion in his photography was essential to meaningful image making .
John then displayed some images of Roxanne Bouche Overton https://roxanneoverton.com , Guy Tal https://guytal.com and Sandra Bartocha sandrabartocha.com who excel in in alternative methods such as Intentional Camera Movement .
Many thanks to Hugh and John for their illuminating odyssey of their photographic endeavour and that of others of note .
